W1st & W2nd Street Park

Warner Larson, now IMEG, in collaboration with Department of Neighbor Development Boston and Breakthrough properties designed a passive neighborhood park and community garden amidst a dense residential neighborhood. The park design is inspired by the “honeycomb” pattern understanding the crucial role bees play in urban agriculture. The design includes  sloped topography with an accessible path to highlight the community garden plots and allow for a vantage viewpoint from the central gathering plaza. The plaza with picnic tables is anchored by a place-making metal sculpture inspired by the honeycomb pattern to give the park its identity and is surrounded by open lawn space with benches along pathways to accommodate small to large gatherings. The design introduces bio-diversity by including several native trees, shrubs and perennials/groundcovers to create an ecological oasis in this urban environment.
