Lower Shawsheen Playground
Warner Larson designed this small playground renovation in a beautiful park setting adjacent to the Shawsheen river stream in the Town of Andover. The old playground was outdated, unsafe and not accessible. In working with the Town and the nearby residents, the design focused on fully accessible ground-based play for both younger and older age groups. The challenge was to design within a modest budget so taking inspiration from the nearby Shawsheen river, the design is organic in nature to simulate river ways. The structures for both are complimentary in style and with bold colorful arches beckons your eye from afar to enjoy the playground. The 2 age group structures are bisected through fun resilient surfacing design that simulates water streams that converge into a pond. The pond has fish patterns and circles around for children to hop and imagine their own games. A picnic table is situated amidst the shade of trees overlooking the playground and the park. Existing boulders from park were relocated strategically to anchor the passive seating area.
