Henry Grew Schoolyard

Through the Boston Schoolyard Initiative the Henry Grew School was selected to
undergo improvements and renovations to their schoolyard. The existing play
area encompassed an asphalt parking lot with a limited program . Warner Larson
was selected by the City of Boston to transform the schoolyard into an outdoor
classroom and lead the project through analysis, design, and construction.
Warner Larson’s design introduces a naturally inviting space with an outdoor
classroom theme of ‘Grow at the Grew’. The schoolyard is meant to broaden the
students experience through learning, teaching and playing, and growing on
site. Educational components like plant succession and history link the school
with the surrounding community and in reference to the schools motto the
schoolyard connects academics with athletics to promote achievement.
