The renovation of Billings Playground, a popular park in West Roxbury, MA, is an example of Warner Larson’s diverse projects aimed to reimagine a space using existing features within a contained budget. With the goal to encourage an environment of imaginative play and story-telling, our design for Billings Playground includes sloped terrain, bright-colored rubber surfacing, and immersive nature play. Some existing structures were refurbished as was applicable, while new play equipment structures (net climbers, springer toys, racecars, playhouse, and water play table) were installed. The durable nature play, including locust logs, was installed on landscaped slopes intertwined with flowering trees, prickly junipers and soft sumac to allow for immersive exploration of the natural world.
