Working with the architect and the community through several public meetings, the design team envisioned a landscape with strong indoor-outdoor connections that invite people of all ages to use the outdoor spaces in a variety of ways. Two strategic moves were critical in transformation of this place into a civic destination. First was to work with the Town in relocating the playground (new play equipment was selected by Town) to the park edge integrating it with the slope opening up the lawn space in front of the library for views and event use. The second strategic move was to work with the architect on the new building massing and floor elevations and the existing grades to create a terraced slope lawn that allows for flexibility from outdoor reading to hosting large events. A central pedestrian walkway through the park creates instinctive circulation path from Weymouth Landing and the neighborhood streets. All of the library outdoor elements are organized along this path including the overlook deck, passive seating, outdoor terrace with movable café seating, lawn amphitheater, pollinator garden, picnic area, large playground, second amphitheater, sensory play space, and woodland bird habitat. These varied outdoor spaces provide all age-groups opportunities to relax, enjoy and connect with the community.
