Warner Larson did the complete site layout design for the LEED Gold certified Dedham Early Childhood Center that serves Pre-K to K 1 students. The welcoming plaza weaves around synthetic turf mounds for children to create that own paths while the radial benches enforce the curvilinear pathways through a grove of columnar trees. There are 2 playgrounds for the different age groups one for the Pre-K and the other for grades K and K-1. The play structures besides providing all the key components of play for the younger children were chosen aesthetically in color and style to complement the modular and peak roof architecture of the school. There is an also an outdoor classroom in the courtyard with school gardens that opens out to a play lawn for soccer and other games. The project has many sustainable elements such as rain gardens in parking lots, color concrete and resilient walkways with high solar reflective index and permeable asphalt walkways.
